We celebrate the commencement of the Greek Revolution proclaimed in 1821 by the leader of the "Friendship Society" Alexandros Ypsilantis, for the freedom of the Greeks enslaved for 400 years by the conquerors Turks. The Revolution began from the Peloponnese, at its monastery Agia Lavra, where on March 25, 1821 the metropolitan of Paleon Patron Germanos secretly raised the flag of the Revolution, giving the slogan for "the freedom of Greece", soon the revolution spread all over Greece.
Also is an important religious feast for the Greeks, and on this day we celebrate the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary (Evaggelismos )
The day of the Annunciation was the day when Our Lady learned the joyous news that she was going to give birth to Christ, the son of God.
For me, March 25th is an important day, first because I live in my country, as a free Greek woman, and as an Orthodox Christian, and of course I never forget the symbolism of these 2 holidays.
I have always remembered this day since my school years, it was a national holiday day, we recited poems, we made a parade, dressed in local costumes and then at home we had a celebration, we celebrated the name day of my sister of Evangelia, a name devoted to the Annunciation of the Virgin , We were gathering friends and relatives, and of course we always ate fish, mainly cod, as a custom established, as we are in a fasting period before Easter.
In the last few years we celebrate the day with magnificent events and of course with our visit to ouzeri to enjoy Greek spring air and sun , drink ouzo and eat excellent Greek dishes with friends and relatives. (Mary Tsil-Trips and Dreams)
Γιορτάζουμε την έναρξη της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης που κήρυξε το 182, ο αρχηγός της Φιλικής εταιρείας Αλέξανδρος Υψηλάντης, για την ελευθερία των Ελλήνων που ήταν υποδουλωμένοι για 400 ολόκληρα χρόνια από τους κατακτητές της Ελλάδας, τους Τούρκους. Η Επανάσταση ξεκίνησε από τη Πελοπόννησο, στην μονή της Αγίας Λαύρας, όπου στις 25 Μαρτίου 1821 ο μητροπολίτης Παλαιών Πατρών Γερμανός ύψωσε κρυφά τη σημαία της Επανάστασης δίνοντας το σύνθημα για την Ελευθέρια της Ελλάδας, σύντομα η επανάσταση εξαπλώθηκε σε όλη την Ελλάδα.
Όμως είναι και μια σημαντική θρησκευτική γιορτή για τους Έλληνες, την ήμερα αυτή γιορτάζουμε τον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου.
Η ημέρα του Ευαγγελισμού ήταν η μέρα που η Παναγία έμαθε την χαρμόσυνη είδηση ότι πρόκειται να γεννήσει τον Χριστό, τον υιό του Θεού.
Για μένα είναι σημαντική ημέρα η 25η Μαρτίου, πρώτα γιατί ζω στην χώρα μου ως ελεύθερη Ελληνίδα άλλα και σαν ορθόδοξη χριστιανή και φυσικά δεν ξεχνώ ποτέ τον συμβολισμό και των 2 εορτών.
Αυτήν την ήμερα την θυμάμαι πάντα, από τα σχολικά μου χρόνια, ήταν ημέρα εθνικής γιορτής ,απαγγείλαμε ποιήματα κάναμε παρέλαση ντυμένοι με τοπικές φορεσιές αλλά και μετά στο σπίτι είχαμε γιορτή, γιορτάζαμε την ονομαστική εορτή της αδελφής μου της Ευαγγελίας, όνομα αφιερωμένο στον Ευαγγελισμό της Θεοτόκου, μαζευόμασταν φίλοι και συγγενείς και φυσικά τρώγαμε πάντα ψάρι κυρίως μπακαλιάρο, ως ένα έθιμο που καθιερώθηκε εφόσον διανύουμε περίοδο νηστείας πριν το Πάσχα. Τα τελευταία χρόνια γιορτάζουμε την ημέρα με μεγαλοπρεπείς εκδηλώσεις και παρελάσεις και φυσικά με την επίσκεψή μας σε κάποιο τσιπουράδικο.
